300 Fortnite Tricks

Here’s a giant selection of tips and tricks I’ve written down (and tried to keep updated) over my years of playing Fortnite. Hope you enjoy them!

1. Make sure to carry a variety of weapons that are effective at different ranges. It’s better to hold a shotgun, an SMG, and an assault rifle than three assault rifles. This is also better for your ammo situation. Don’t want to run out!

2. If you see or hear someone using a med kit or a big shield, they’ll be in a vulnerable state for 5 to 10 seconds. Now is the time to attack. They could be only one or two hits from death.

3. Bait an enemy into exiting their vehicle by unloading your weakest weapon on it. Be ready to swap to your main weapon the second they hop out.

4. Try to save your explosives for when there are only a few players left and the circle is small. You’re more likely to land splash damage or force your enemies to retreat into the storm.

5. If you use ramps to scale a building you’re planning to camp in, make sure to destroy the ramps after you’re in a good spot. Otherwise, people will be suspicious you’re still around.

6. Always keep an eye on how much ammo you have. While you might only need 1-5 shotgun shells to win a fight, you’ll need significantly more AR or SMG ammo. Retreat if you’re running low.

7. Instead of saying, “There are people to my left,” use the in-game ping. Alternatively, you can use compass directions. “I saw people to the north.” (Make sure your teammates understand how a compass works. Not everyone does.)

8. If you stay on the edge of the circle, you’re less likely to encounter multiple enemies. People who camp in the middle of the circle can be approached from all sides.

9. You can bait an enemy into chasing you by unloading your gun at them and not reloading. They’ll think you’re out of ammo. When they chase you, switch guns and kill them.

10. The game will change every season. Don’t get stuck on your old favorite weapons. Make sure to test everything that’s new, or was brought back.

11. If you don’t want to damage teammates with your rockets, shoot them through a window. If they explode on the other side, your teammates outside the window won’t take damage.

12. Burst mode is best for shooting players, full auto is best for walls and wildlife. Rule of thumb: If it’s right in your face, put it in its place. If it looks like prey, chip away.

13. It’s a lot safer to be aggressive when your enemy is weak. This is why it’s important to tell your squad if you hit someone. “I chipped him a few times. Shields are gone.”

14. Use your weapons for what they were designed for. Shotguns are a great close-up single target weapon. Multiple enemies at a distance? Go with the AR. Don’t get stuck on one weapon.

15. Loot llamas drop more loot after they’re killed. So, if one is bouncing around, don’t just follow it. Get your squad to team up on it. (Trapping it with walls makes it easier to kill. Go for headshots.)

16. At the very start of the game, enemy players should be ignored in favor of finding guns. Guns and minis are always the top priority. Ignore everything else, especially bandages.

17. When the game is coming to an end, watch the kill feed so you know which weapon your enemies are using. This can be super helpful if you discover they have a rocket launcher.

18. Since small shield potions (minis) can be chugged quickly, you should almost always drink them as soon as you find them. Even if an enemy is nearby. Just drop a wall and you’ll be fine.

19. When rushing towards someone across an open area, make sure to drop ramps. These will give you the best combination of protection and height advantage.

20. Try to always keep an SMG in your inventory in case you need to knock down a wall and finish someone off. They’re also useful for fighting animals like wolves. You can go full auto since they don’t move around much.

21. Everyone can see a supply drop on the map. If the circle is small, then others are coming for it. Since you probably already have enough weapons and ammo, use the supply drop as bait. Ambush players that go to open it.

22. Always try to aim for the head because it does the most damage. If you miss the head, then switch to the body, since your target is now probably running around like a chicken with their head cut off. (Much harder to land a headshot.)

23. People using default skins who seem to be great builders might be trying to hide their skill level. Kill them first, then go after their squad. (They might even be a streamer/pro!)

24. Don’t get too annoyed if you die. It happens to everyone, even the pros. Watch a stream instead of a YouTube video. Pros often die in the first few minutes. YouTube videos are like highlight reels. Streams are behind the scenes footage.

25. If you land on a roof and don’t hear a chest then there isn’t any chest beneath you. Consider moving on to a different building. Don’t waste time at the start of the game. Opening chests should be your top priority.

26. To avoid fall damage when falling down a cliff, hug the edge. You can also try spamming ramps and floors. You might get lucky. Better lucky than dead!

27. Building tiles that are aren’t finished building will take extra damage from weapons. So, drop multiple walls if you want maximum protection. (Wood walls start with more hit points.)

28. If you’re fighting a squad, ignore any player that’s been knocked down. Focus on killing the people still alive. Even if you kill knocked players, they can be revived with reboot cards. So, it’s important to wipe out the whole squad.

29. If you want to get #1 then let the other players fight. Only engage when you have the upper hand, or if it’s down to the last two people. Unnecessary fights will result in premature deaths.

30. You can use a med-kit at any health level under 100. Don’t be afraid to use it at 80 or 90. You can’t take any items to the next game. If you don’t use it, the person who kills you will.

31. If you’re feeling tilted or annoyed, then retreat from a fight. There’s no point in fighting when you’re stressed. Hide in a bush, heal, drink your minis, and take a deep breath. Okay, now go.

32. Avoid holding down the fire button because your aim will be terrible. Instead, use short bursts. Fire, wait, fire, wait. Test this at the start of the game. Watch how the reticle grows with each shot.

33. Don’t leave any items as bait at the start of the game. Grab everything you see. If you grab it, your opponent can’t. A pistol versus a pickaxe isn’t a fair fight, but it’s a winnable one.

34. If you can’t find the chest, it’s either in the attic, the basement, or in a secret room. Just keep smashing down walls until you find it. Don’t worry about killing the tile with the chest on it. Your loot will fall onto your head.

35. If you’re sniping, then you should absolutely aim for the head. If you hit them but don’t kill them, they will run and heal. You might only have one opportunity. So make it count.

36. Keep shields in your inventory instead of healing items like bandages or med kits. Let other players carry those. Take then when you kill them.

37. Drinking the big shield when you don’t have minis isn’t a bad move. It’s a safe move. Staying safe is how you get to the final circle.

38. If you have a unique weapon like a rocket launcher, keep it secret from your enemies. Take it out at the last second. If your enemies know you have that weapon, they might alter their play style.

39. Before you engage, make sure you have enough ammo to get the kill. Sometimes we get overzealous, charge in, and our weapon goes click, click, click. Don’t be that person.

40. Just because you were AFK and landed in the water doesn’t mean you can’t finish first. Just think of it as nightmare mode. You’re playing on a higher difficulty.

41. Never run straight across an open field. Strafe back and forth. Run from cover to cover. Boulder to tree. Fence to house. Assume you’re about to get sniped. Play carefully and you’ll survive.

42. Stand still or crouch when you’re shooting. Don’t panic, aim straight, and you’ll do fine. Switch to another gun instead of reloading. If you have to reload, strafe and jump.

43. Chests will always drop a weapon, and a weapon is better than a pickaxe. Make it your top priority to find a chest as soon as you land.

44. If you’re going to emote after a kill, make sure you’re looking at a #1 Victory screen. Otherwise, you’re just asking to get shot.

45. A great pair of headphones is important if you’re playing on a PC. It’ll be much easier to find chests and figure out where footsteps/gunshots are coming from.

46. If a teammate dies, all surviving members of the squad should converge on their location. Try your best to save them, but don’t wipe the team for it. Worst case, you can grab their reboot card.

47. Wait carefully for the right opportunity to snipe. You might only get one shot. Choose your timing carefully. It’s fine to let them vanish from your scope for a second. They’ll be back.

48. When running through houses you should be smashing all the furniture you can. It dies in one hit and gives you lots of wood.

49. While it’s fine to knock enemy walls down with your guns, it costs too much ammo to knock down structure walls. Use your pickaxe to do most of the damage, then switch to a gun to finish it off if you suspect an enemy is behind the wall.

50. If you see someone camping on top a hill, this person is probably not good at close combat. Run up and engage them with a shotgun.

51. When your shotgun is reloading you should be moving around/jumping/running/dodging, etc. Try to make yourself hard to hit. If the enemy gets a headshot, you could die in one hit. So you must be slippery!

52. Try to make a mental note of how much damage you’ve done to an enemy before pushing in. If they’re down to only a few hit points, you can be super aggressive with an SMG.

53. If you want land as fast as possible after jumping from the bus, aim for water. Rivers, lakes, etc. The lower the map tile is, the later your chute will deploy.

54. You’ll need to adjust your sniping technique for different distances. Do a Google search for “bullet drop + fortnite” to see what the latest stats are. The farther away you are, the higher above someone’s head you’ll have to aim.

55. Sniping from a height advantage is easier because if the enemy returns fire, they’re less likely to hit you. They also have to slow down, look up, aim, and then fire. You might be able to get two shots off before they get one.

56. If you’re shooting from a far distance and seeing low damage numbers, then your gun is not good for that distance. Switch to something else. Even if the SMG is your favorite weapon, it doesn’t make sense to snipe with it.

unsplash-image-M1nZU61xTK4.jpg

57. Avoid fighting groups of Henchmen (exclamation mark mobs) by yourself. It’ll cost you too much ammo, health, and mats. Take them down with your squad and you might escape with full life.

58. If you see two players fighting and building lots of towers, then let them finish before you intervene. They’re probably both good players. It’s easier to kill a pro at 20 health, than two pros at 100.

59. Move your weapons and items around so that they’re in the same slot each game. For example, keep your AR in 1, shotgun in 2, SMG in 3, etc. Muscle memory will make easier to swap to the correct slot. Faster switching = less dying.

60. If you build a ramp tile in a funny direction, make sure to reset it before your next fight. You don’t want to be messing around with building tiles during a fight.

61. If you’re going to throw grenades at someone, throw a lot. It might take a few to knock down their walls. You’ll also need 2-3 hits to kill them. So throw a lot! You can always find more. People always leave grenades on the ground.

62. Observe which direction the battle bus travels. Most players jump early, so you can expect them to be travelling in a certain direction. This makes it easier to ambush them.

63. If you stop too long to examine a pile of fresh loot, then you’re just asking to get shot. Other players might have been waiting for you to finish your battle.

64. Winning the early game is all about adapting to whatever items you’re given. You won’t always get great stuff. You won’t always find a chest or shields right away. You must make do.

65. Better to use a med kit for only a few health than leaving for another player to find. Especially if you’re in the forest, or an area where items are sparse.

66. You’ll get less loot landing in the forest, but it’s a lot safer than landing in a city. If your goal is to finish in the top 10, then you should try to avoid any risky combat. Risky combat just equals more deaths. And wait for a new game to start.

67. Loot, chests, and supply drops should be avoided at the end of the game. You probably don’t need any of it, even the ammo. Putting yourself in a bad position just so you can grab your third big shield is a dumb move.

68. You don’t need gold or purple weapons to win the game. All you need is a few well-aimed headshots. This can easily be accomplished with grey weapons. Learning to shoot straight is more important than finding high-level weapons.

69. Don’t take unnecessary fall damage if you don’t have to. A lot of fights are won or lost by only a few hit points. Even 10 less life could mean the difference between victory and defeat.

70. Data miners ran the numbers and found that shield items give you the maximum chance of winning. Focus on finding these in the early game, and make sure to carry them with you in the end game.

71. Your accuracy will decrease with each shot if you’re holding down the trigger. While it’s better to fire short bursts, if you are going full auto then aim for the body. It’s a waste of ammo aiming for the head.

72. When tracking someone to snipe, spend a few seconds observing their movement. People tend to move in predictable ways. Especially when moving across open ground. They might jump or strafe, but the movement isn’t usually random, which allows you to time your shot.

73. When throwing grenades, learn how to use the grenade arc. It’s that curved line that appears when holding a grenade. If you can master the arc, your grenades will be a lot more accurate.

74. Don’t waste all your building materials at the start of the game. Be conservative with them. It’s tougher/more dangerous to mine at the end of the game so you’ll want a big reserve.

75. If you’re reloading a gun with single shot ammo (shotgun, sniper, etc) then make sure to hide. Never stay in the open if you don’t have to. Think of yourself as a rare Pokémon that millions of people are trying to catch.

76. If you’re fighting in a house, or behind some walls, make sure you’re the player who’s peeking right. If you peek left around a wall, you expose more of your body and less of your gun. (Fortnite characters are right-handed.)

77. Dying a lot? Try filling in for squads. You’ll get a lot more play time since your teammates can bring you back to life if you die. Spending more time on the island will make you a better player.

78. Land in the most popular zone of the season if you want to get lots of combat experience. You need to be great at all stages of the game if you want to consistently get #1.

79. If you engage at close range with a long-range weapon, you’re gonna have a bad time. Especially if the other player has a weapon like a tactical shotgun.

80. If you engage a squad, try to quickly figure out which one is the best player. Focus fire on them first. The best players usually have cool skins, move around a lot, and build quickly when shot at.

81. If you’re down to three players, let the other two fight and then engage the winner. There’s no shame in hiding a bit. Survival is the name of the game. The longer you survive, the more likely you are to finish first.

82. Don’t just stand still in the open when using healing items. Pretend you’re being fired at by multiple enemies. You’re in a vulnerable state, so act like it. Hide behind something at least.

83. When playing in Trios or Squads, it’s a good idea for each player to carry a support item. Med kit, gas can, grenades, etc. Then you’ll have access to everything you need. More options is just better economics!

84. Focus on mastering a few landing zones instead of landing somewhere different each game. This way you’ll learn where the chests normally spawn and have an advantage over players that don’t.

unsplash-image-XmYSlYrupL8.jpg

85. If you’re engaged in a firefight, and your enemy disappears behind a wall, they’re either reloading or healing. Either way, it’s a good time for grenades. (Or any other long-range explosive.)

86. If you’re close to the edge of the storm, but don’t want to leave a 6th item on the ground, you can juggle it forward with you. Just keep picking it up and swapping it with another item. Each item will land a bit further than the previous one.

87. The rarity of most items is irrelevant. A “legendary” pistol is still garbage. Use the right weapon for the situation, regardless of rarity.

88. If you’re going to build a ramp to a higher level so you can hide, make sure to destroy your ramp. This makes it harder for other players to tell you’re there, and they can’t run up and kill you by using your ramp.

89. Avoid fighting animals. You’ll almost always take some damage, and the noise will attract other players. Just ramp and run.

90. While it’s smart to ping which area you’re going to drop in, it’s even smarter to ping which building you’re going to land on. Landing on the same building as a teammate is a recipe for less weapons!

91. When you’re pushing someone by ramping across a field, don’t just ramp in a straight line.

92. Never reload in a firefight without first dropping a wall. You’ll just be vulnerable to getting shot. If you have no mats, then dive for cover. Fences are better than nothing!

93. When attacking a build, focus on collapsing the entire thing rather than knocking down individual walls. Fall damage can be surprisingly high in Fortnite.

94. Always try to swim through water rather than running through it. You’ll move a lot faster. It also makes you harder to hit. Swim like a dolphin with a giant brain.

95. Make sure to use in-game bonuses like the upgrade bench. They usually don’t cost much in materials, don’t take much time, and provide a solid upgrade. (If you turn a purple gun into a legendary gun it could win you the game!)

96. Always be moving, even when you’re most standing still. If you’re looking around for the last player, or staring through a scope, you should still be moving a bit. Even the slightest movement makes you much harder to hit.

97. If confronted early in the game by an enemy with superior weapons, your best course of action is to go for headshots. All things remaining equal, it’s the only way you can win.

98. Chasing other players into buildings at the start of the game is risky. They might find a shotgun, turn around, and blow you away. Play a bit safe until you have some good starter gear.

99. Be careful how high you build your towers. If you go past four tiles, you’re going to take a lot of fall damage if someone blows up your sky ramp. (Which is a very safe and fun way to kill someone. So watch out!)

100. When sniping, if your target is moving it’s a lot easier to land a body hit than a headshot. Sure, you’ll do less damage, but half their life is better than none of their life.

101. Most rifles can be used as a substitute for a sniper. Just make sure to crouch and fire off single shots. Pretend your AR is a burst AR that’s limited to one shot.

102. If you want to get better at Fortnite but don’t feel like playing, watch some YouTube videos. These are better than live streams because YT videos tend to be edited down to just the good stuff. You can also rewind them and adjust the play speed.

103. If you haven’t gotten more than 100 #1 finishes, then don’t worry about losing. Just focus on improving. Practice all your skills. Land in different areas. Try different weapons, etc.

104. Avoid swimming against the current. It’s faster to walk on the land. You’ll be more vulnerable to getting shot, but at least you’ll outrun the storm.

105. Drop walls behind yourself when retreating from a firefight, or if crossing a field and getting sniped at. Walls are annoying to knock down, cost a lot of ammo, and give away the shooter’s position to other players. They might just let you run off without pursuing.

106. Shotguns tend to rule the early game. If you only have time to grab a rifle or a shotgun before engaging another player, go for the latter. Close-range combat demands close-range guns.

107. Gun rarity can be important, but not worth losing life over. If it’s down to only a few players, it might be safer to leave that loot on the ground than running across an open field to grab that legendary SMG.

108. If you’re running past a truck and don’t hear the chest noise, it’s not worth investigating. At best you’ll find an ammo box. Hunt for chests and llamas and ignore the rest.

109. If you’re fighting close-range and both of you have shotguns, then whichever player has the high ground will probably win. This is because it’s much easier to land a headshot.

110. If you get sniped, don’t waste too much time looking around for the enemy. You’re now at a massive disadvantage if they decide to push. Better to run and heal. Engage again later.

111. Before you leave your starting zone, make sure you have farmed enough materials so you can engage in at least one build fight. Make sure to loot everything as well. New players often leave town too early.

112. Since rockets don’t travel through the air very quickly, you can do a rocket/rifle combo against someone hiding in a tower. After you shoot the rocket, take out your rifle. Shoot down a wall. When the rocket arrives, it might hit them right in the face.

113. If you suck with a particular weapon, spend a few games using exclusively that weapon. It’s the only way you’ll get better.

114. Don’t worry about missing your sniper shots. Even the pros miss a ton of them. Just concentrate on improving. More shots, more skill.

115. Most players never carry grenades. This is a mistake. Grenades are incredibly useful, especially in the end game. Launch 3-4 at anyone you see building or camping in a tower.

116. While not the best weapon, a pistol is better than nothing at the start of the game. Just don’t be concerned with the rarity. A legendary pistol is still pretty much garbage in the end game.

117. Avoid breaking down any walls or mining any materials you don’t have to. If you have enough mats, then the extra noise/movement just exposes your position. Play carefully!

118. If you have grenades and see someone run into a room that doesn’t have an exit, drop a ramp and toss some grenades in. The ramp will protect you, but die to the grenades. So will your enemies.

119. If you want to get good at scrappy fights with bad weapons, landing quickly in popular towns is the way to go. Spend a few games hunting other players as soon as you land. Fighting is the only way to get better at fighting.

120. If you think your opponent is running low on ammo, you can drop walls in their face. Engage when they switch to their pickaxe to knock your walls down.

121. Breaking through walls and floors is a good way to get the drop on someone. Especially if you’re breaking out of a house. People keep an eye on doors, but rarely on the living room wall.

122. Avoid buildings that have been looted. They are 99% of the time, a waste of time. All you’ll find are green/grey weapons and the occasional mini. The door is open? Avoid.

123. Improving the various skills it takes to win a game is a better use of your time than avoiding enemies and trying to finish first every match.

124. It’s generally safe to push someone who just won a 1v1. Especially if you think they took damage. Their health will be lower, and they might not have reloaded all their guns yet. Now is the time to be aggressive.

125. Abandon your position if you’re being shot at by different teams/enemies. That’s a battle you will almost always lose. Better to retreat, heal, and regroup.

126. If you see two players engaged in a tower/build fight, try to knock their towers down by shooting out the base tiles. Since they’ll be shooting at each other, your gunfire is less likely to give away your master plan.

127. You can fall from any height without taking fall damage if you land on tires. Same thing goes from umbrellas. The general rule is: If it looks spongy, you probably won’t die.

128. Make sure to have a good wall-destroying weapon in your inventory. Or better yet, a weapon that’s so powerful it shoots through walls.

129. If you sneak up on someone and start shooting at them from a distance, but miss all your shots, consider retreating. You’ve given away the surprise factor, and now your gun is half empty on ammo. If they turn around and engage you, you could be in trouble.

130. Never engage an enemy if you’re down to three players left. The circle will be small, and the third player will hear you fight. Even if you kill the first player, you might have to fight the second right away. You’ll be down health, ammo, and mats. Not a good situation.

131. If you walk around while crouching, the enemy won’t be able to see your footsteps. This is a fun way to ambush people with a squad.

132. It’s faster to swap to another weapon during combat than to reload your first. Even for single-shot guns like the shotgun.

133. If you’re a big shotgun user, you should try to always carry at least two of them. Two hits from a shotgun are usually enough to kill someone.

134. Don’t blow all your rifle ammo trying to snipe someone across a field. A kill isn’t worth all your ammo unless it’s the last one.

135. The people with the highest kill count don’t always win the game. All you need is one kill to win. The less you die, the better you’ll place. Yes, the more you kill the more loot you’ll get, but at a certain point the loot becomes useless.

136. If you’re playing with teammates and one of you is using a sniper, then another player should as well. This is because if you both land body shots, then your target will still die.

137. When fighting a superior builder, try to force them to the ground. You can do this by either running and hiding, or knocking out the support tiles on their tower.

138. Things will change every patch, so make sure to read the notes. Sometimes the changes can look small but have a big impact. Like when damage numbers on a gun are reduced. Could mean it takes three hits to kill instead of two.

139. If you want to get pickaxe kills (for whatever reason) then don’t jump from the battle bus. You’ll be ejected automatically and land with other players who were AFK.

140. It’s fine to use healing or shield items when all you need is five or ten health. How many times have you seen the person that killed you survive with just a sliver of life? Very annoying.

141. If you find yourself always begging teammates for items/building materials, then you need to work on your harvesting and item-finding skills. You should never ask for anything except rare ammo (rockets, sniper, etc.)

142. If you find you’re dying a lot in close combat, try spending a few games practicing with the shotgun. The better you get with close-range weapons, the more confident you’ll be in pushing, and the less you’ll panic when pushed.

143. Instead of just running past a fence, use your harvesting tool on it as you run past it. It’ll slow you down a little, but you’ll gain a lot of wood.

unsplash-image-3g7IWbleuN0.jpg

144. If you can’t find a weapon right away and are surrounded by enemies, hop in a vehicle and run them down. Especially if all they have is pistols.

145. Try to always be the one who starts the fight. If someone else starts the fight, they probably have an advantage on you. That’s not a situation you want to often be in.

146. If someone else does start the fight, consider withdrawing. They have first strike advantage, and if they land the first hit, they have a health advantage also. No shame in running and winning.

147. If you must engage two enemies that are already fighting each other, make sure to target whichever player you think is the best. (Probably the one with the best building skills.)

148. When snipers are in the game, you really want to be strafing, jumping, and hiding as much as possible. Standing still in the open is a good way to get your head blown off.

149. If you hear footprints, chug your big pot instead of waiting to find minis. You’ll probably be in a fight to death soon anyway.

150. If you see a rocket coming towards you, dive for cover behind whatever you can see. Things like rocks and trees (sometimes vehicles) can prevent you from taking any splash damage.

151. Really try to avoid using a sniper rifle without zooming in with the scope. Yes, it’s impressive if you can land a hit like that, but at close range it’s a very inferior weapon to a shotgun.

152. If you don’t think you’re going to land your jump, then try to build floor tiles. You might get lucky and tag one alongside the building. Better than taking fall damage!

153. It’s totally fine to use a mini when you’re at 40-49 shields. More shields is always better. Don’t save it for later, you will find more. By the end of the game the ground is littered with shield pots.

154. Test the damage numbers and range of weapons while waiting for the bus. It might surprise you how much shotgun damage falls off with even a tiny bit of range.

155. Unless you’re using a tactical shotgun, you only have one or two shots to win the fight. Time them carefully or be prepared to run away. Shotguns should be practiced frequently. Spend an entire match only using them.

156. If you want to get better at sniping, always snipe from the same distance. This way you’ll learn lead time and bullet drop. Which are the two most important things for sniping.

157. If you aren’t using traps or jump pads, you just have less options than your opponent. Since these don’t take up item slots, you should definitely learn how best to use them.

158. If a teammate does poorly, don’t make them feel bad. That doesn’t help anything. Offer words of encouragement for the next round. Everybody has off days, even professionals.

159. Weapons with unlimited ammo are great for knocking down walls, damaging vehicles, or for use against non-player characters/animals. Their damage usually isn’t great though, so try to avoid using them in a fight with another player.

160. If you have decent guns, lots of ammo, and a couple shield pots, you can start leaving other stuff on the ground as bait. Especially in the final circle. Let other players expose themselves for worthless items.

161. When pushing an enemy across an open field, make sure to drop ramps as you move forward. These will give you protection, and the high ground, which makes headshots easier.

162. If someone is in a building and you launch explosives at it, they will panic, and often run out. Then you can gun them down. Panicked players are the easiest to kill.

163. At the start of the game, grab all the items you see (even if they suck.) You don’t have to be choosy with your item slots, and it also prevents enemies from grabbing these items.

164. Make sure to harvest materials as soon as you land. In an early shotgun fight, a single wall or ramp can make a world of difference.

165. In a shotgun battle, whoever gets a headshot is usually the winner. So, you need to time your movements carefully. Try to jump a fraction of a second before they fire, and they’ll miss your head, or miss you entirely. Learn how long the reload speed is, and then jump when it’s up.

166. The purpose of the game is to stay alive until the end. You don’t need to get 20 kills to get a #1 finish. Focus on staying alive and being at max life. Play as though you only have 1 health left.

167. When sniping at someone who is peeking their head above a wall, and instead of hitting the person you hit the wall, then you aimed too low. Aim a bit higher. Don’t forget about bullet drop.

168. When running cross country, investigate every rock outcrop, or strange batch of trees. There are often chests hiding in those places.

169. If you’re gonna check your phone, make sure to box yourself in. Otherwise you’re just asking to get sniped. (This will annoy your teammates.)

170. Weapons do different damage to structures than they do to people. Make sure to check out the stats before unloading your pistol on a house. (Explosive do the most damage.)

171. If you want to get lots of combat experience, then land in the most popular zones. If you see someone run into a house, follow them. Make it a point to engage in a much combat as possible. It’s the only way to get better.

172. Instead of playing the game normally, try to improve your build skills as much as possible. Box people in, box yourself in, ramp rush people, etc. The more you build, the better you get.

173. It’s safer to run over enemies with a vehicle than it is to engage them in a firefight. Getting a free knock in Trios is a huge advantage.

174. Most pros will carry three weapons, three big pots, and six minis. The weapons are often a shotgun (close range), rifle (medium range) and a sniper (long range). This allows them to engage at any distance and heal up if they take damage. (If no sniper is available, they’ll grab an SMG.)

175. If you see someone running out of the storm, fire at them and force to dive for cover. The longer they spend in the storm, the easier it will be to kill them when they get out.

176. If you want to be a competitive Fortnite player, then you need to learn how to build. Learn how to edit your wall and then shotgun your enemy to death. Wall up again if you miss.

177. At the start of the game, if following an enemy into a building, let them open the chest. You grab the guns. They have a delay after opening. You can get the gun first.

178. While it’s unwise to knock down a tree at the end of the game, it’s fine at the start. People are occupied looking for guns when they first land. Knocking down a tree gives away your position. People can see a falling tree from a far distance.

179. If you make too much noise in Fortnite, you’re gonna die. Pro players will come after you like a Terminator robot. So, when in a populated area, avoid using vehicles and crouch-move a lot.

180. Don’t avoid fights in the early game. You need to learn how to fight to the death with only a pistol and 100 health. It’s the only way you’ll get competitive.

181. If waiting for someone to walk through a door and all you have is a rifle or SMG, aim for the middle of the door. Hold down the trigger when they appear. You’ll be so close the firing bloom won’t affect you even if you go full auto.

182. Single-shot pistols like the hand cannon are decent weapons. This is because they can often kill in one hit if you get a headshot. (These are still bad once you hit the mid-game.)

183. Riskier fights are possible when engaging players coming out of the storm. Assume they’re at 80-90% health. (Makes a difference for headshots.)

184. If traps are in the game, leave them in popular places and make the room look unlooted. You never want to die with unused traps. That’s just a waste of resources.

185. If you have a grey weapon, then use that to knock down walls. Save your good weapon for the enemy player. Long or medium range weapons are also good for this. Save the shotgun for the showdown.

186. If you can’t find the chest then just smash everything. They’re often hiding in weird places like behind walls, inside dog houses, etc. You have to explore with your harvesting tool.

187. If you absolutely have to stop moving, even for a second, make sure to wall yourself into a 1v1. And don’t forget the roof. Protect your head!

188. Don’t be too picky about lining up long-range shots. It’s usually better to take a couple pot shots and retreat if you miss, than to never shoot at all. Chip damage is important, especially in the end game.

189. Once you’re familiar with a few landing zones, try out some new ones. Try landing in the woods. Try landing in the middle of nowhere. Everywhere you land will build your skillset.

190. If you box yourself in and the enemy is reloading, there’s usually enough time to pop two mini potions, which you should always be carrying. They’re great because they take only take 2 seconds to drink.

191. If you sense your opponent is panicking, box them in. They will waste their ammo trying to shoot their way out. Newer players will feel like trapped animals. This is good for you.

192. If there are lots of enemies around, it’s fine to drink your big shield before finding minis. Having 50% more health than an enemy is a big advantage if you both have bad weapons.

193. If traps are in the game, consider using them as motion sensors. You can hear them trigger from far away. So, if you’re holed up in a house, trap the next house over.

194. Dodging rockets is easy. Just keep moving. They’re mostly used to blow up structures and stationary vehicles. If you get hit with a rocket then you probably weren’t paying enough attention.

195. Grenades are useful for end game. When you’re down to a few last players, they tend to hole up in towers or buildings. Flush them out with three grenades.

196. If you fully harvest a tree, then it will fall. Other players can see this on the horizon and will now know where you are. So avoid doing this when the circle is small and other players will definitely be nearby.

197. Try to always use your guns in “burst mode.” As in, shoot, wait, shoot wait, shoot wait. This will give you greater accuracy. It’s much better than just spamming ammo. Calm and precise is the motto.

198. An easy way to get materials and weapons at the start of the game is to land on a roof. Mine towards the ground level and pick up any items along the way.

199. It’s definitely a good idea at the start of the game to have enough mats for at least one tiny fight. If you found a shotgun, you’ll need a wall to reload safely.

200. When multiple enemies are nearby, crouch and hide until they go away. Or let them start a fight. They won’t hear your footsteps if they start shooting.

201. While blue chests and llamas are nice to find every once in a while, you don’t need them to win the game. All you need is to stay calm under pressure.

202. If it’s down to the last few players and the circle is small, consider tossing a mini or a big pot on the ground out in the open. Someone might be tempted into exposing themselves to try and grab it. Snipe them in the head!

203.  Look up the damage and the headshot damage of your favorite weapon. These numbers are good to know if you use that weapon a lot. It will allow you to engage in more fights because you’ll know if an enemy is one hit from death.

204. Buildings will collapse if the bottom tile is shot out. But, if you build a ramp up the side of a static map piece, like a mountain, your building won’t collapse.

205. Even if ambushing someone from behind, be prepared to drop a wall when they spin around. You might still miss. It happens.

206. If you must camp in a building, do it in building that spawned with the map. The surest sign that another player is around is seeing a tall player-made structure. It’s a dead giveaway to your position.

207. If you pretend to only have a pistol, you might trick an enemy into rushing in to kill you, even though he doesn’t have a ton of health. That’s when you switch to the pump shotgun.

208. You’ll need a lot of everything for the final circle, especially health. Don’t waste any resources you might need for the final showdown. There won’t be any more opportunities to harvest.

209. If it’s safe to do so, and you have the spare resources, try to always drop walls/ramps when engaging other players. It costs hardly any time to set them up, and they provide protection.

210. Make sure to wall yourself in 1x1 before activating the campfire. If you don’t have the mats, then just keep moving and strafing around the campfire. Squatting or staying still is a recipe to get eliminated.

211. Don’t waste ammo on someone too far away. You won’t do much damage and it’ll spook them into hiding. Even if you hit, it probably won’t kill them unless they’re severely injured.

212. If you get your most kills with a certain gun, consider carrying two of them. It’s faster to swap guns than it is to reload. Just don’t bring two shotguns and no long-range weapon.

213. Your average placement will be lower if you engage in every fight regardless of advantage. The goal is to finish first in every game. Don’t fight stupid fights. Run and live. Fight again another day.

214. If you get a gun and spot a player that hasn’t, it’s not always worth it to chase and kill them. You’ll have limited ammo, and your gunfire will attract other players. Plus, your prey might turn a corner and find a shotgun.

215. If you build a huge tower and camp at the top of it, you’re just asking for people to team up and knock it down. Have fun with the explosives that will be launched your way.

216. If you’re uncomfortable using a weapon or item, then you should spend a few games using that thing as much as possible. Training against real enemies is the best way to improve.

217. The last enemy, or last few enemies might not be the best players in the game. They might have gotten lucky. Don’t be scared of them just because they’re all that’s left. You can do it.

218. When approaching a new area, make sure to scope out which buildings have been looted. Avoid these. Especially if there are builds attached to them. It might be a trap.

219. Focus first on clearing the area of enemies, then save your teammates. Alternatively, grab them and toss them into a safe place, and drop a 1x1 fort around them.

220. While resources might be scarce at the start of the game, they are plentiful during the mid-game. So don’t put yourself in a bad position mid-game to grab something. You’ll probably see more of it later.

221. The best snipers to get good at are the one-shot kill snipers. Namely, the bolt-action. Learn to get headshots and you’ll get more wins.

222. If you want to destroy a building quicky, you must use explosives. A few well-tossed grenades can level an entire house or tower. Aim for rooms with lots of walls and you’ll do more damage.

223. Crouching with a rifle turns it into a pseudo sniper. Learn to get hits with that, and you’ll greatly improve your sniper skills. It’s basically the same skill set. You can still get lots of kills.

224. Better to land on the roof of a house than going in the front door. This way you can get the attic chest, but also run off the roof if someone is chasing you.

225. Instead of dying with an inventory full of traps, have you tried deploying them? It’s much more effective.

226. Learn to use the jump pad. It’s not just for escaping. It’s fantastic at pushing people that are holed up behind a wall. Especially if they’re healing. Nobody ever suspects a flying squirrel attack.

227. Try to always smack with your harvesting tool the things that will die in one hit. It barely slows you down so it’s basically free mats.

228. Don’t drop extra items where enemies can find them. Toss them in looted houses or surround them with walls. Make it difficult.

229. The rarer a gun is, the more damage it does to both players and structures. It also reloads faster. But that’s it. The fire rate is the same. So don’t go bananas trying to upgrade from a blue to a purple. It’s not worth dying for.

230. Try to make a point of always aiming for the head. It’s a guaranteed kill with a lot of weapons, especially if they don’t have shields. It’s always best to end a fight as quickly as possible.

231. If you spam too many building tiles, then other players will see where you are. Drop tiles when necessary. Remain stealthy. Pretend you are soldier trapped behind enemy lines.

232. If you want to train at fighting lots of players with bad loot, then jump from the bus as soon as it passes the first town. Most players (especially in competitive) will jump early.

233. Landing in larger cities might not mean more enemies, but it does mean more loot. Everything else being equal, a slight edge in gun quality and shield quantity will give you the win.

234. If you’re sniping people while hiding on a ramp, you should still wall yourself in. It’s not just the front that’s dangerous. When you’re not moving, you’re exposed on the sides and the back.

235. When playing squads, if an enemy is behaving strangely, they might be moving towards a knocked teammate, or trying to protect them while reviving. Either way, you should push.

236. Never panic when you see enemies with better weapons. This game has very little to do with quality of weapons, and everything to do with aim, building, and the ability to stay calm under pressure.

237. If you want to practice staying calm under pressure, then you need to play a lot of games. Land in the craziest places. Fight everyone and everything. A professional is just someone that’s made all possible mistakes and learned from the experience.

238. If you hear gunshots/footsteps, then turn a corner to find some great loot, there’s probably an enemy healing nearby. Be careful about looting, you could be walking into a trap.

239. Wooden walls start building with lower HP than brick and metal, but finish building faster. So, if you’re under fire and need to make a quick escape, drop stronger walls behind you.

240. If you’re struggling to survive in competitive mode, then trying landing in the middle of nowhere. You don’t have to fight fair to make it to the top 10.

241. If you can’t immediately establish where the enemy fire is coming from, you should wall up or run. Fighting someone you can’t see is a death sentence. Try to always be the person who fires first.

242. If someone dies in water and you have a hard time seeing their loot, you can crouch and look towards the sky. This should give you a better camera angle of the stuff underwater.

243. The farther from the center of the map you land, the sooner you’ll have to leave so you don’t take storm damage. Know your escape route. Vehicle? River? Plan ahead in case you get delayed by a fight.

244. When playing in groups, avoid nonsense chatter. Keep the comms clear so people can point out enemies, loot drops, etc.

245. If you kill a player in duos, trios, or squads, be aware that their friends will try to come save them, or at least get their reboot card. Ambush them!

246. If two different people engage on you in a solo match, run for your life. All things remaining equal you will lose every time. Let the other two duke it out and engage the survivor.

247. If you run out of mats in a fight, then you must either retreat, or try for a desperate last aggressive push. While retreating you can harvest mats. Just run along aside cover and harvest it but try not to destroy it.

248. Try copying the keybindings from pro players. It’s their job to maximize their performance, so you can bet they put a lot of thought into it.

249. Fill for squads if you keep dying in solo mode. You’ll probably pick up some tips and tricks from more experienced players. Now all you have to do is learn how to build quickly.

250. You don’t have to always be running around looking for people. It’s fine to just camp somewhere near the circle’s edge and wait for the enemies to come to you. Be like a spider.

251. If playing with teammates, one person should always carry healing items. You never know when someone is going to take some unexpected damage that only a med kit can fix.

252. If you’re ambushing a squad, it’s not the worst idea to hold down the fire button and go full auto. Yes, your aim will go down, but if the squad is grouped together, you’re more likely to hit multiple targets.

253. If you aim a weapon at a tree, it will show you if it’s been harvested or not. This can give you an idea if enemies are around. If the tree is down to one hit left, there might be a pro lurking nearby. Pros don’t fully harvest trees because they don’t want them to collapse and give away their position.

254. If you’re down to the top 10, and want a higher chance at finishing first, then try to avoid all combat. Pretend you’re one hit away from death.

255. Emoting after killing people should only be done if it’s the last kill of the game. Otherwise you’re just asking to get sniped in the head. (This is a bad strategy for winning.)

256. You don’t have to pick up the loot from every kill. Especially if you’re already kitted out. Have enough shields? Good weapons? Ignore loot drops. They’ll just put you a position to get sniped.

257. If you do see something you like, just remember what it was, and loop back later when it’s safe. (Just don’t forget about the storm.)

258. If you’re getting poor results with the shotgun, then you probably need to get closer. For the pump shotgun especially, you really need to time your shots. It’s better to wait for the perfect shot, since a headshot can often kill.

259. If you assume that all your enemies are professionals, then you’ll never be surprised by their actions. Treat them with the respect that a highly-trained assassin deserves.

260. A good legendary weapon makes excellent bait. Toss a golden pump or rifle on the ground in the final circle, and you’ll lure out even the most cautious of players.

261. Try to crouch before shooting your first shot. It’ll increase your accuracy and make it harder for your opponent to see you and hit you back. (You’ll also hide your footsteps.)

262. If the storm circle is small, you can bait an opponent by building a fake hut. They might think you’re holed up inside it and healing. But meanwhile, you’re sneaking around behind them.

263. Instead of using doors (which are slow and noisy), hack your own hole into a building. Everyone knows where the doors are, but they don’t know where your secret entrance is.

264. If you’re walking through a looted house and see a closed door, there might be a person in there healing, camping, or texting their significant other.

265. If an enemy is firing less shots than you think they should be, they might be running out of ammo. Now is the time to push them. If you can force them to go full-auto, they’ll probably run out of ammo (and miss).

266. Never run in a straight line. Strafe, jump, crouch, use cover, etc. When running cross county, imagine there is someone with a sniper rifle aimed at you. Move like you would then.

267. If two other players are having a sniper war, wait until someone dies. The winner will have to walk across a lot of open territory to loot the body. That’s an opportunity for an ambush.

268. Just because an enemy grabbed the first gun before you did, doesn’t mean you can’t get a pickaxe kill. Weave around a lot. They won’t have much ammo. If they run out, you win for sure.

269. Close the door before opening your first chest. You don’t want someone coming up behind you and grabbing the gun before you do. (Or killing you with their pickaxe.)

270. Forget using an SMG at long range. Even if you hit, the damage is terrible. Someone could turn around, miss half their shots, and still kill you because they had a rifle.

271. If your gun does 150 damage with a headshot, then try to chip away 50 damage with your rifle/SMG before you move in close. Paying attention to damage numbers is key. “I am only two hits away from killing my enemy. One to the body, one to the head.”

272. You might play better with the “visualize sound option” enabled. Then you’ll see where the footprints and chest noises are coming from. You’ll also see visual indicators for vehicles and parachutes.

273. While running aimlessly, make sure to look around. Like when crossing a field. Look to your left and right constantly. Observe as much as the environment as possible.

274. If you encounter a player that’s faster at building than you, then try to take the fight to the ground. Run if you have to. Pro builders have an edge in a build fight. Remove the edge!

275. Better to use an item for 1% of its maximum use than to leave it for an opponent. They might use it for 100% of its maximum use. (This could lead to your death.)

276. If you want to be the first armed person on the ground, jump before the bus reaches a town. Aim towards anything that looks like a hut. There should be a gun there.

277. If you’re playing competitive and having a hard time getting hype, then land in the middle of nowhere. You’ll get some free hype just by surviving because there’s nobody around to kill you. (You can get pretty far using this strategy, but eventually you’ll have to learn how to build.)

278. To be the first person that hits the ground, jump from the bus as soon as it launches and aim towards water. Glide straight down towards anything that looks like it might have a gun.

279. The storm does barely any damage at the start of the game, but a lot near the end. This means you shouldn’t be afraid to spend a bit of time in the storm at the beginning. Especially if you spot a chest, or a great item.

280. It takes 50% longer to chop down trees and bushes if you miss the little circle. The difference between 2 or 3 hits can really add up. Save time and learn to hit the little circle.

281. If part of a building has a hole or crack, it’s usually possible to snipe through it. Just don’t forget the bullet drop.

282. It’s faster to swap between two weapons than it is to reload one. If you must reload a weapon during a fight, always drop a wall so your enemy doesn’t get a clear shot at you.

283. Make sure to use auto run when sorting your inventory or dropping an item for a teammate. You’re more likely to get sniped since you’re running in a straight line, but movement is better than no movement.

284. Even if you suspect (or know) an enemy is at low health, you should go for the headshot anyway. Mastering the art of the headshot is key to getting more #1s.

285. Just because you built a nice building doesn’t mean you shouldn’t abandon it if pressured by multiple enemies. Yes, it cost a lot of materials, but you can’t get those back anyway. Run away and farm some more.

286. Keep an eye on your teammate’s health and shield bars. Make sure to share healing and shield items with them. Try to keep everyone at max.

287. Before engaging any enemies in a tower, ask your teammates if they have explosives. Launch those first, and hope to collapse their tower, or at least get some chip damage in.

288. Vehicles are a great way to try and get some damage in without getting hurt in return. Conversely, don’t spend too much ammo/health hurting someone’s vehicle. They can always just jump out and engage you at full health/ammo.

289. Mushrooms can usually be found in open fields. If you find one, it’s a good bet there’s more nearby. If there aren’t any mushrooms nearby…then it means an enemy has been through this way. Tread carefully.

290. When playing on a team, don’t be too concerned with landing the killing blow. It’s irrelevant who kills the enemy, all that matters is getting that #1 victory screen.

291. Try to keep a watch on how many players are left in the game. Your strategy for fighting and whether or not to loot items should change as the players dwindle and the circle shrinks.

292. If you see another player (or squad) holed up in a big build and when the circle shrinks, they won’t be in it, consider not engaging. It’s like attacking a castle you don’t need to. Wait for them to open the draw bridge, then attack.

293. If you have a bad gun, or you’re low on ammo, mats, or shields, consider running. Yes, it would be courageous to stay and fight, but courageous players spend more time waiting for the bus to launch.

294. If a weird/utility item is introduced to the game (like the recon scanner) make sure to try it out a few times. It might end up being surprisingly useful.

295. If you’re taking storm damage early on in the game, then you’re doing something wrong. You should be looting your initial area quickly, and then moving on. Don’t waste time.

296. Gun rarity is less important than accuracy training. Spend a few games trying to win with just grey and green guns. It might surprise you how good they are.

297. If you aren’t in a rush, smack everything you can with your harvesting tool as you run past it. Mats are one of the most important items you can fill your inventory with.

298. Share rare ammo with your teammates. Like if they have a sniper rifle, and you don’t, give them your sniper ammo. Rare ammo runs out quickly, and if you give them yours, it allows your teammate to take more risks.

299. If playing with teammates, one player should always carry a med kit. It’s a great way to get full HP after someone revives you from a knockdown.

300. If you aren’t great at building, you can either accept that you’ll never be a Fortnite Superstar (this is totally fine) or you can decide to practice building. Practice every day. Every fight. Even if a bad player engages you, drop walls like it’s the #1 player in the world and you’re at 50 health and zero shields.

Thanks for reading and good luck on the island.
