The Best 5-Letter Starting Words for Wordle
Wordle is a popular word game that challenges players to guess a hidden word based on the frequency of its letters. The game is a great way to exercise your vocabulary and improve your spelling skills.
So, what are the best starting words to use in Wordle?
1. SOARE. This is a great word because you get three vowels, an R, and an S in the first position. While plurals were recently added to the game, they won’t end in S. Plurals will be words like GEESE.
2. CRANE. Two vowels, R, N, and C. All great letters and in great spots.
3. STARE. Are you seeing a pattern here? Data scientists have run the numbers and more Wordle words will have an A, R, and E than not.
4. ROATE. Three vowels, an R and a T. This is a great starting word if you’re looking to complete the puzzle in three or four guesses. But since the Wordle list has an editor now, you’re unlikely to get it in one guess by using ROATE. The editor likes to choose words that people have heard of before.
5. SPARE. Similar to STARE except you get a P instead of a T
SPACE is also a great one. In fact, we could list a hundred great words to start with. The possibilities are huge. And Those are all great starting words but I don’t recommend you start with any of them unless you’re obsessed with maintaining your streak.
Why you should use a different Wordle starting word every day
Choosing a different starting word every day for Wordle is a great way to keep your brain sharp and improve your vocabulary. One of the biggest benefits of playing Wordle is that it challenges your brain to think critically and creatively. By using a different starting word every day, you are constantly challenging yourself to think in new and different ways, which can help to improve your overall cognitive function.
Another benefit of using a different starting word every day is that it can help to expand your vocabulary. Wordle requires players to think of words that are related to the starting word, which can help to expose you to new and unfamiliar words. As you learn and use new words, your vocabulary will naturally expand, making it easier for you to communicate with others and understand written content.
Using a different starting word every day can also help to keep the game fresh and interesting. If you always use the same starting word, the game can become repetitive and boring. By switching it up every day, you will be able to enjoy the game more and be more motivated to play.
Some tips and tricks to getting better at Wordle
1. Look for common letter patterns: Many words have common letter patterns, such as double letters, common letter combinations, and silent letters. Look for these patterns in the Wordle puzzle and try to use them to your advantage. Like if you get a green vowel in the fourth slot, then it’s likely that your second vowel is in the second slot. Many five-letter words in the English language are structured like C-V-C-V-C. Like HAVEN, or SOLID. (C = consonant, V = vowel.)
2. Use a word list: Keep a list of words that you know and refer to it when playing Wordle. This can help you quickly identify potential words and improve your chances of guessing the hidden word. If your starter word doesn’t have an A or E in it, then what’s your backup world for using the O, I, or U? PIOUS is a good one. So is ODIUM.
3. Guess words with common letters: Words that contain letters that appear less frequently in the English language, such as "x" or "z" are rarely used in Wordle. Try to focus on guessing words with common letters first as they are more likely to be part of the hidden word.
4. Remember to look for double letters: Some of the trickiest puzzles are the ones with two of the same letter. Like BLURB. This is because after we find the first B, we stop thinking that B can be in the puzzle. So, try to remember that because you have a green letter, doesn’t mean there isn’t a copy somewhere else.
5. Think outside the box: Wordle puzzles can sometimes include words that are not commonly used in everyday language. Think outside the box and try to guess words that you may not have heard of before. Don’t be afraid to enter a word just because you haven’t seen it. If it looks like a word and it fits the puzzle, go for it.
6. Always go for maximum information. This means avoid words at the start with double letters. Starting with a word like SHEEP is inferior to SPACE, because with SPACE you get five pieces of information versus four with SHEEP. That’s 25% more information!
Wordle is a fun game which can sometimes be frustrating. You should be aiming to complete the puzzle in four or less guesses. But don’t be upset if it takes 5 or 6 or even if you whiff it. This is not a game to be taken seriously. Try playing it with your significant other. Rotate guesses. Have fun with it and challenge yourself by using a different starting word each day.
